I finally get to hold my words (and so can you!)

As a first-time author, I had dreamed about getting the first copies of my debut novel, Deep Background. Thought about finally getting to hold it in my hands. Imagined what it would be like to flip through the pages.

I finally got to live out that fantasy today.

In the interest of transparency, I will say that I was tired and probably did not give the opening of the box or opening of the paperback cover enough pomp and circumstance (I currently have a physically laborious day job that’s acting as research for my next novel). But I will fall into a blissful sleep tonight with a gigantic smile.

Newspaper editing versus novel editing

I’ve heard it said that journalists are the prostitutes of the literary world, turning quick tricks for low pay. I have a stronger appreciation for that joke having completed my first novel and got it about five yards away from the end zone (apologies for the mixed metaphors).

Editing at a newspaper, which I did for about five years non-consecutively, is quick and the stories are short. Even magazine articles (which I’ve written but never edited) and Sunday A1 features are infinitesimal compared to a novel, even a relatively short one like my debut work, Deep Background (now available for pre-order at http://blackrosewriting.com/suspensethriller/deepbackground).

Book review: The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

I wanted to read this novel because it was, as the cover indicated, a No. 1 Bestseller, and the movie was about to be released.

Though it was a good read, it was not one that I felt was worth the hype.

Without giving any spoilers, I will say the main “mystery” was not hard to solve early, and the getting there did not completely make up for knowing whodunit. In addition, I did not create a strong emotional connection to any of the characters.
